Steps in the Recruitment Process

1. Application Submitted
Submitted applications will be reviewed for completeness and to ensure all information required has been provided. Only those applicants short listed for further consideration will be contacted.

2. Job Awareness Assignment (Optional)
The Job Awareness Assignment is an optional step in the recruitment process. Applicants are encouraged to spend time on our transit system observing Transit Operators working with the public.

You are encouraged to complete this assignment, to assist you in deciding if being a Transit Operator is a suitable occupation for you. This assignment is done on your own time and at your own expense.

Instructions for Your Job Awareness Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to expose you to the actual work environment of Transit Operators. Transit Operators work on their own and have to deal with a wide variety of customers, situations and working conditions. This assignment will assist you in deciding if becoming a Transit Operator is a suitable occupation for you.

We suggest you ride and observe at least two of the following transit routes:

Conventional Operator

  • Route #10 Granville St./Hastings St.
    (Monday through Friday) after 4:30PM.
  • Route #20 Victoria Drive Downtown
    (Monday through Friday) after 4:30PM.
  • Route #3 Main Street/Downtown
    Friday or Saturday after 11:30PM.
Community Transit Operator

  • Route #C37 Port Coq. Station/Prairie Ave/Riverside
    (Monday - Friday) between 4:30PM - Midnight.
  • Route #C74 Fraser Heights/Guildford/Surrey Central
    (Friday or Saturday) between 10 & 11:30PM.
  • Route #C52 Seaside/White Rock Centre
    (Monday through Friday) between 4:30 & 11:30PM.
  • Route #C21 Yaletown/BurrardStation/Beach Ave
    (Friday or Saturday) before 7PM.
Please note, we suggest you ride each route for a minimum of thirty minutes.

While on the bus, sit near the driver to observe the people and situations that he/she must deal with. Observe traffic conditions. Observe the passengers on the bus.

2. “Start” People Sense Video Test
The Video Test presents 50 scenarios, which are frequently encountered by Transit Operators. After each situation is presented applicants enter their selection for the most appropriate response on a multiple choice testing form. The video test measures an applicant’s customer service skills and their ability to diffuse potential conflict situations. The test takes approximately 2 hours to complete. You will also be required to complete an English comprehension test in the form of a written exercise. When attending testing, you must bring valid picture identification with you, i.e., valid passport and/or valid driver’s license. To ensure the integrity and security of Coast Mountain Bus Company’s Operator Trainee hiring process, only a Pass/Fail result will be disclosed. Detailed information about test results or the scores will not be provided.

3. Panel Interview
The interview consists of a panel of two individuals. Applicants must demonstrate that they possess the key qualities for the position using specific past and present work-related experiences and how these were handled. While attending the panel interview, you must present picture identification in the form of a valid Driver’s license. (If you have recently renewed your Driver’s license and carry just an Interim Driver’s Permit please ensure you have a valid passport or BC ID in your possession) You must also bring a complete list of work references (if not already supplied), and a current original driver’s abstract to the panel interview. Successful applicants will be contacted by phone and asked to obtain a Learner’s License (if applicable) in order to proceed to the Trainability Test.

4. Trainability Testing
The Trainability test is conducted at one of CMBC’s Transit Centres. The applicant spends approximately 2 hours with an Instructor from our Training Department and has the opportunity to drive a bus on the city streets in the area. This testing measures the ability to remember a specific set of instructions. On the day of your trainability testing, you must bring with you the original copy of your British Columbia Class 2 w/air (Conventional Operator) Instructional Learner’s License or; British Columbia Class 4 Instructional Learner’s License (Community Shuttle) if applicable. Please ensure that your Learner’s license has not expired. You must also present a valid Driver’s License (if you have recently renewed your Driver’s license and carry just an Interim Driver’s Permit please ensure you have a valid passport or BC ID in your possession). To ensure the integrity and security of Coast Mountain Bus Company Ltd’s Operator Trainee hiring process, only a Pass/Fail result will be given. Detailed information about test results or the scores will not be disclosed.

5. Reference Checking
An applicant who successfully completes the Trainability test will be contacted and notified that they will have their references contacted. If you have been at your current job for a long period of time, we will conduct reference checks with former supervisors that you have had with your current employer. If self-employed, references from regular customers, suppliers, etc. are required. A minimum of three (3) references encompassing the last 5 years are required to complete this stage of the process. In-depth reference checks are conducted by Coast Mountain Bus Company Ltd. staff to verify all information provided on the application form and during the panel interview.

7. Criminal Record Search
Coast Mountain Bus Company Ltd. will conduct a Criminal Record Search through their chosen Service Provider at the end of the process (Please do not complete this step yourself). The cost for you to complete the criminal record search is $37.10. We let all applicants know that the Criminal Record Search and Vulnerable Sector Search includes but is not limited to, the following areas:

  • Offences related to drugs or alcohol
  • Offences related to violence or the threat of violence, including physical assault
  • Offences related to physical or sexual abuse
  • Offences related to theft or fraud or any other offence not mentioned above
Applications are assessed to determine if applicants have demonstrated a safe and responsible driving history, as determined by Coast Mountain Bus Company Ltd.

6. Medical Exam
Upon successful completion of the above steps CMBC will contact applicants to be scheduled for a medical exam. Please do not complete this step on your own. Our medical encompasses the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Act to ensure that the applicants meet the medical qualifications necessary to hold a Class 2 w/air or Class 4 License. Applicants who hold a Class 2 w/air (Conventional) or a Class 4 (Unrestricted) (Community Shuttle) Learner’s License will be instructed to obtain a Driver’s Medical Examination Form from the Motor Vehicle Branch to take with them to their appointment in order to complete their Medical. There may be a fee for the Driver’s Medical Examination Form of $28.00.

9.  Offer of Employment
Those who have successfully completed all the recruitment steps are contacted with a verbal offer of employment as a Transit Operator Trainee and a mutually convenient start date is arranged.
